Why'd they gradually make Pikachu skinnier? Sack-shaped characters are adorable. Japan loads those crane games with cute blob animals that have the cat expression face.

If they wanted to make Pikachu cuter to amp up his marketability, wouldn't it make sense to keep him chubby? Or did they do it to make him easier to animate.
