I think it’s simply because it doesn’t go far enough in one direction.
It’s too haggard and not cutesy enough for the mass appeal of furries like with its prevo (with some niche exceptions)..
And yet its also too furry and not magey/wizardy/witchy enough for mass appeal of non-furries
If it leaned in to one side more it’d have more fans

Magician would at least be useful for playthroughs if you could actually get it on your starter and if you could still use it to steal items from NPC trainers. I have no idea why they changed that.

That ability would have been OP if it allowed to snatch objects such as mega-stone, z-Crystal, orbs, plates or discs when these objects were abused in the metagame. Imagine snatching his trump card from your opponent and in some cases using it against him.

Seems like they always go as far out of their way as possible to prevent people from ever doing anything fucky (read: fun) with any of the weirder abilities like this. Like how you can write a book on all the ways they prevent you from nullifying Slow Start just to stop anyone having fun by just skill swapping it.

Magician is not a shitty HA it's just Delphox movepool that burden it, if Delphox learned U-Turn or Volt Switch to steal items easier and have a new signature move that works like Fling it would be good.
