If you pay attention to interviews and quotes from GF staff you can see the exact timeline of events that caused GF to start making the games soulless: GF puts a lot of effort into gen 5 --> Gen 5 doesn't sell better than other games and many fans call Gen 5 shit --> They try to make XY another good game, but have trouble with 3D development, causing the latter half of XY to be rushed --> Despite being obviously rushed and inferior to the previous games, XY sells better than BW and as well as RS, with many fans calling it the best Pokemon game --> They purposely put less effort into latter games starting with ORAS after seeing that game quality doesn't improve sales --> It works, causing them to continue to make low effort games on purpose.
XY was the last game where they actually tried, and the poor end result selling well is what caused them to purposefully start putting less effort in.
