Let's talk about some ROM hacks and ones you have fond memories of.

One of my favorite ROM hacks was "Pokemon TRE: Team Rocket Edition". It wasn't the most in-depth ROM hack, but it satisfied my inner-kid desire to play as Team Rocket in a Pokemon game and made me realize how much their team fucking sucks and why they're constantly losing to a Pikachu.

I haven't got into ROM hacks, I'm sure I'm missing out on a lot

I admire the hell out of this hack, but I don't know if I find it particularly fun. It forces you into so many cutscenes in order to sync up with the anime, but the amount of work put into it is astounding.

I really like Yet Another Fire Red Hack. On surface it's just another difficulty/new mons hack but author actually was reasonable and sticked to having Dex of 151 Pokemon hand picked from Gen I-V (as that was available when it was released), the difficulty feels really organic (except for final post-game quest but author was honest that it's BS because it's literally final part of the game and wanted to go all out lol) and Pokemon changes are made to fill in interesting niches instead of making everything high-tier OU bs.
