Yeah but it's significantly worse because it shatters immersion. Following pokemon can be interacted with. Only compshitters who treat the games as a numbers game don't like following pokemon.

Following Pokemon was one of those things that really only worked in 2D. With 3D models, it just looks robotic and off-putting. It benefited from the abstract nature of sprites allowing the player to fill in the details with their imagination.
