It's a VERY silly game (there's one chapter where you have to find a way to get into Nintendo HQ to bum an item off one of the hardware developers to progress). Kensuke Tanabe, who was the writer on Link's Awakening, was a huge fan of it and directed the staff to take the game in a similar direction. So the game was full of weird shit like Evil Kirby, a random out-of-place crane game, and a bizarre sidequest where Mr Wright from Sim City is in a long-distance relationship with a talking hippo who sends him photos of a hot human chick and claims they're her (princess peach). At one point, one of the staffers even had to ask whether they were supposed to be making a Zelda game or a parody of a Zelda game.
It's one of those things that would never, ever happen with modern Nintendo.
