I don't remember the trading part? Really? That's actually a thing? I wonder how the fuck I got my Gigalith considering I didn't think that trading would ever get me new evolutions.
That being said, I don't remember the moment I was so happy my bipedal Geodude evolved into a tripedal Graveler, before evolving it through trade into a quadrupedal Golem that wasn't impervious to dynamite.

Well there's argument to be made for the fact it lacks a Golbat counterpart but other than that... There's a lot of basic rock types that exist and can be found in a cave. I just didn't remember the trade evolution part, and I've made a fool of myself that way.
Design wise they're still RADICALLY different.

The pokedex explicitly states Golem's immune to dynamite, which is probably the furthest thing down the durability spectrum from literally anything short of 1 feet of angled treated steel.

Since they made the decision to "reboot" Pokémon by making BW have Unova-only mons, they had to recreate everything from scratch. This meant they could use a chance to have homages of previous generations. The problem with Gen 5 though is that it treats like Kanto is the region to reference the most in terms of mon designs, and the new count of mons (156) is closer to the 151 of Kanto than any other region.
The choice to make BW Unova have only Unovamons is a bit meh if you ask me because it only alienates the game from the other regions. They could have thrown a few Pokémon from the other 4 regions but instead, they're all hanging out in the areas that are conveniently locked until after you beat the Elite Four

The region had a few Pikachu references as well which felt like a bit of a slap in the face. Again I understand the intent of giving the new Pokemon a chance, it's a lot better than having the older Pokemon steal the spotlight but I personally found it a bit extreme

Blame later gens. Unova was the first one set outside of Japan and treated as being far from the previous four regions, which was the explanation for its totally distinct native pokemon.

If this design decision was made today all these "clones" would be regional variants and it would make just as much sense. Like the gigalith and woobat lines are good examples of pokemon that exist just to fill the cave encounter tables. Honestly half the dex is probably made up of these kinds of soft copies and/or the staples that always show up (starters, regional bird, pikaclone etc)
