If I have to pick one, which is better? I’ve played diamond but never platinum. I like having pokemon following me but having a fuller dex also sounds nice

following platinum is literally just platinum, which isn't going to be hugely different than what you played in diamond
renegade adds in stuff like 99x TMs, fairy type, harder boss fights and enemies and also new plot segments, it's a fairly different experience from platinum altogether. i like it more than actual platinum, especially because there's a lot more variety to your team than just 'starter + staraptor + luxray + fwg core' but i can see why somebody would play platinum over it

Hmm based on that maybe I should play following platinum first and then maybe try renegade later on. My last time playing diamond was when it came out, and I’m mostly just playing platinum for the giratina part and so I don’t have to buy BDSP

What makes a pokemon powerful? that it stands out from the rest isnt it? well, if we boost every pokémon its stats, and if we make that every pokemon can learn the same powerful moves, now that every pokemon is powerful, now nobody is... you got me?

also, some pokemon in renegade learns really powerful moves on early stage, and then... whats the point? If I already have powerful moves early... I will never appreciate those moves since I had them since the beginning

is like having ember with charmander in FRLG until you got flamethrower with charmeleon, NOW you feel powerful cause you had a shitty move a lot of time

you feel progress... you know what I mean???

anyways... that is my way of playing pokémon, feeling that the opponent pokémon is stadistically stronger than mines, and with strategy I manage to beat it... Thats the magic of Pokémon for me

Those strong moves you're talking about are like Water Pulse and Extrasensory, though. You still get stuff like Flamethrower or Ice Beam around the proper time, the game just doesn't restrict you to using shit like Ember for the first few hours and there's still a feeling of progression towards stronger moves.
Also, everything is buffed to make it usable, not necessarily powerful within the context of the game. Just because Kricketune isn't just stuck with subpar stats and Bug/Normal moves doesn't mean it's as strong as Metagross, it's just something that can be fun to use for the whole game if you want.

and playing following pokemon made my gameplay fun, maybe when finishing following pokemon and then playing renegade I can tell you its difference :)

You'll love Floette, then
Her only STAB move is 40 power until 46, which is when she gets a 95 power move and shortly afterward, the strongest Fairy move in the game

Also like >>48746604 points out, many Pokemon have awful movepools which Renegade (and later games, to be fair) corrects. Like the infamous Leafeon learning Leaf Blade at level fucking 70.

not him but having played r-platinum, it's not like all the pokemon got equalized; it's more that previous shitmons and middling pokemon became ""viable"" to use as they would've been completely outclassed otherwise due to the rebalancing of the game; and certian good but not excellent fan favorites (froslass, flygon etc) got souped up

to be quite honest, the ESL is right. Renegade has a very edgy feel to the whole design. Drayano gives the first gym leader a guts flame orb larvitar. None of your pokemon get an ability that good, let alone a complimentary item like that before your first badge. Its just annoying to play because you are expected to minmax your entire journey. I would rather just have more difficult AI alone rather than ridiculous power budget issues like that. Let alone the cheap movesets they give to all the gyms, when you would have to grind a ton to get the same power/variety.

In the end drayano hacks are just a test of patience, he even implements grinding features and no level caps. You can still sweep everything if you wanted to.

in following platinum your cute pokemon follow u and its adorable bro. way better

You can get a Starmie, Shiftry, Ludicolo, or Eeveelution of your choice before the first badge, on top of an Expert Belt, the elemental boosting items, Quick Claw, Water Pulse, etc. Larvitar also isn't even literally that good. It's statistically worse than the baby form starters.

Except that A. people complain when the AI becomes more difficult to play around and accuse it of cheating half the time, and B. it's a DS hack, you're not going to see AI alterations anytime soon.

It's interesting you're complaining about this, but then say two seconds later that Drayano implements means to grind extremely quickly. So which is it? Is it too hard, or is it too easy? You can customize how hard the experience is, it's no different than normal Pokemon in that regard.

I remember playing a Platinum hack (Enhanced, I think?) literally a million years ago and I loved how it did that, I felt like it added a lot of charm to the hack despite being such a simple thing.

You don't even really need strategy, is the thing, it's not that hard of a game and if it weren't for the 6 mon boss fights it doesn't even really feel like a difficulty hack. It's just an updated experience of Platinum where you can use anything, have the entire dex as of Gen 4, and where you have some features from the newer games, yet autists from both sides of the aisle use it to fling shit about muh difficulty. Honestly if this is why partly Drayano is discouraged from finishing SGSS v2 I wouldn't blame him, especially as this has gotten way worse since Radred released

Honestly RP isn't batshit hard like Crystal / Emerald Kaizo, gym leaders still have monotype teams that you can exploit of and nothing in the game resists proper teambuilding. The only remotely hard fight from that game is Wake's fight, which starts with permanent rain and forces you to bring your own weather if you don't want to be at a massive disadvantage, but even then you have lots of options already at that point.
