With BDSP out of the way, Legends Arceus is coming next. Give it to me straight lads, does it have a chance of actually being good? The game looks like absolute ass visually but maybe GF decided to sacrifice the graphics for gameplay? And they even subcontracted another studio to make a mainline game for them for the first time ever, hopefully to get more dev time.
Is there any fucking chance of this game being good?

It's animated well I guess, and gameplay is basically Monster Hunter but Pokemon, which sounds pretty awesome on paper. But it's fucking stunning just how little of a reason to believe in them modern GameFreak gives us, practically everything they made since the DS days was flawed in multiple ways.
I guess I just really fucking want this game to be good. It looks like the first real chance for Pokemon to break out of mediocrity, and if this shit works out, we'll have a game to gush about for years. But if it doesn't, we are so fucked.

Yeah, the concept is more innovative than...literally anything GF has done in the last 8-9ish years.

Graphics are very hit and miss, and there's a very low chance of that improving before release, but I could very well be wrong.

Gameplay looks like it'll be focused on catching and battling but I'm worried that it'll run into the issue where you just repeat the same few things again and again. That would be shit, but is par for the course with GF.

On the more positive side, if you compare what GF did for base SwSh, with what they did for CT/IoA it's very obvious they got better at making a better game. So could they learn from it and make PLA actually interesting? Maybe, but keep your expectations in check.

It's consistent in how it plays, yes. Turn-based battles with chibi overworld sprites with full-sized in-battle sprites. Team of 6 pokemon, you fight 8 gyms, the elite four, and the champion, then you fill your dex and if you're shit at online you play postgame facilities.

This formula works, this formula is good, and fuck anyone who thinks it needs "fixing".

It's not just about being the same as before. Consistency implies that the series retains its level of quality relative to the advancements of technology, without making too many changes. Dragon Quest is consistent because it retains the same visual and game design sensibilities that go all the way back to the original game, but it also updates all the stuff that needs updating, such as important QoL changes, graphics, technology in general, and scope.
Stagnation is when the series remains the same regardless of advances that happen around it. For the standards of late 90s Game Boy development, Pokemon games were mighty impressive. But standards evolved, while Pokemon didn't. BDSP is painfully small and boring compared other RPGs of our time. Take Atelier for example - those games are very low budget, they're released annually, but they are fucking miles ahead of anything GameFreak does.

Then you clearly need to play more games then? Pokemon is one of the most stagnant, if not outright regressive, series in the world, and kind of coasts of it's name recognition alone.

Story? Bland cookie cutter characters with a basic ass plot sums up most of the games plot. Protag is a literal brick, Gym leaders tend to never matter much after you beat them, and the game has to actively railroad you to every single plot point rather than build it up organically.

Gameplay? They keep trying to spice up the main gameplay loop with gimmicks, but quickly abandon them instead of fleshing them out. Different battle types, Contests, Pokeathlon, Megas, Z-moves, Secrte Bases, Seals, Battle Frontier etc. everytime they even try anything new it only sticks around for a generation or two before being dropped until the inevitable remake.

Pokemon could very easily be better than it currently is and that's very obvious when you compare the games to other Monster Collection games, like DQM, or actual RPG's, like SMT/DQ/Almost all of them.

The game is Atelier Ryza 2, a very comfy JRPG focused on alchemy - the main point of the game is collecting resources and crafting everything, from consumables to weapons, balancing quality and effectiveness. It's a really damn old series, the first game was released 1 year after Pokemon Red/Green, and it gained quite a pedigree among genre enthusiasts. It's safe to say that there are no games with crafting systems as complex and involved as Atelier games. It's not the first thing I would recommend to a casual player (Atelier games are pretty grindy), it's just an example of great games made in circumstances similar to GameFreak.
If you want to collect monsters, your best bet is Shin Megami Tensei 5 and Persona 5. The former is focused on combat mechanics, while the latter has a much heavier focus on story and characters. Both are stellar JRPGs, well worth hundreds of hours you can sink into them, with tons of really cool creatures to collect. Megami Tensei games can be intimidating, but once it clicks with you, it will never let go.

I honestly don't have any problem with the graphics, they're serviceable. The gameplay loop looks repetitive though and not that fun. I have doubts the combat will be engaging enough to want to fight Shinx 25 times or whatever to progress and "open world" (not really but bigger than usual maps) so far looks empty. Not to mention the last time GF tried making a different style of turnbased gameplay, we got the slog that was Little Town Hero.

Pokémon has been sticking to that formula for ages now, faggot. And that hasn't given us a decent game in a long ass time. Obviously it's a downgrade, Switch is not nearly as powerful. Still, the game looks great, certainly more impressive than Legends Arceus and its N64 tier textures.
