Let me put it to you this way:
Gen 3 were the first pokemon games I didn't like. Gen 5 were the first pokemon games I didn't buy.
Gen 5 was so bad it literally put me off the franchise until this year when I pre-odered BDSP because it looks like the games I played growing up. It has all the things I'm familiar with as well as the things I enjoyed about gen 6 when I finally emulated it in like 2019.
I have only finished gen 5's games once each, I cannot bring myself to finish them because of all the forced cutscenes and forced minigames and constant roadblocks to the adventure. It feels like every time you get into a new area you have to stop, solve someone else's problem, and only then can you advance in your adventure. It's less an adventure and more of a boring railroad of a shitty, poorly-written plot. BW2 just make this worse.
Gen 7 has all the same issues and then some, being so handholdy they're the only games in the franchise I can't bring myself to finish.
Haven't played gen 8 but considering the even-numbered gens are the best ones out of what I've played it's probably great fun unless you're a compshitter, in which case opinion discarded.
