>Gen I: The original, good but a bit too primitive >Gen II: The future of the francise, better than the original every way, most the flaws had been worked out, ambitious and only limited by the hardware of the time >Gen III: The new kid, builds on the Gen II metric, adds a couple of good mechanics, but the pokemon roster/region/style lacked the personality to truly stand out, tried a little too hard with design trying to find its own identity and appeal to a younger audience now that Gen II started to grow up >Gen IV: The sweet spot, further added to the Gen II metric but came with a more nuanced and balanced approach, designs and styling aiming back at the original fans and didn't try so hard to be cool/edgy, the hardware was the perfect situation for a game in the original pokemon format, the closest a pokemon game has gotten to perfect. >Gen V: The new kid 2.0, Gen V was to Gen IV as Gen III was to Gen II, still decent but not a classic or standout, also the beginning of the end >Gen VI: The new frontier, still a decent game but desperately trying to and failing find an identity in the new 3D world, first true shark jump from pokemon with megas >Gen VII: The downward spirial, took Gen VI and doubled down on all aspects including shark jumping, lots of soulless rehashing and dumbing down, targeting the zoomers who have no real interest in pokemon rather than the core fans, arguably the worst core games >Gen VIII: The distant relative, not really a pokemon game like the rest, can't fairly be compared, and thats not a bad thing, its just a different sort of game, the original series is now done

Gen 3 was when the designs tanked but they only got uglier and edgier in Gen 4 and 5. Unova literally has the ugliest Dex overall apart from Galar.
