I agree. It's probably a controversial opinion here, but I think USUM could be the best Pokemon game, even better than HGSS and BW2, if it weren't for all the cutscenes dragging it down and the decision to replace PSS with Festival Plaza in Gen 7. I never really liked the Wifi Plaza or Join Avenue, so I didn't like Festival Plaza much either. That said, I really like Mantine Surf, the Pokepelago, and shiny hunting with Ultra Wormholes. Maybe I'm weird.

It showed promise but was far too slow for my liking. I wish they used USUM as a chance to speed up the game while keeping the admittedly very cool island trials, the 2 hour tutorial just kills the game

I can’t even bring myself to replay any sun and moon variation because I find the forced tutorials fucking exhausting. At least Gen 8 gives you the option to skip most of not all tutorials

USUM adds some really cool concepts but none of them pays off.

The idea of Necrozma being this interdimensional being who sucked the light of an entire world feels something out of a traditional JRPG series. But instead of letting us see it, they just tell us and show us a tiny glimpse of it.

It's too bad, but in the end, SM just told a better story, even if way more simple.

Cutscenes were insufferable and challenges were retarded but overally Gen 7 had more soul than every other post Gen 3 game save for HGSS.

The cutscenes are the only major flaw. I can't believe I used to think this game was bad, it's a masterpiece compared to the shit that came after, and looking back, I think it was decent enough on its own. I like the challenge.

I completely agree that SM have better narratives, but aside from BW there aren't ANY other noteworthy stories in the series. As such, I don't think it's much of a priority over gameplay and content, which USUM beat SM on. USUM have some of the craziest NPC battles in the series, with some sets I'd never expect to be in a single player Pokémon.
It's why I prefer BW2 over BW1: their story wasn't any good, but they certainly had a lot more to do than the prequels.

I agree. USUM have some ideas up there with the greats you listed, but the unskippable cutscenes kill replayability, which is one of the main appeals of Pokémon.

The game had so much potential if it weren’t for the cutscenes, but they honestly drag them down so much for me. Even shittier games with less cutscenes I end up liking more because I can ultimately fuck off and do what I want.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Gen 7 is one of the absolute best in the series your first time through, especially if you like story, characters, cinematics, etc. But it's the absolute worst game in the series for replays. It's so insanely slow and railroaded.
