I have lived through every single generation of pokemon, played every single game up to Platinum at fucking launch. You want to talk someone with a connection to this franchise, I'm your man. I didn't get HGSS at the time because I was in college when they came out, and was in my "I'm TOO COOL for Pokemon" phase, also skipped gens 5-7 but eventually got around to playing all of them. The only games I haven't played are SwSh because I heard they could brick your switch at launch, which put me off them, but I'm wanting to play them now.
I can say with certainty from replaying the older games that they aren't as good as you remember them. Sure you might play them randomized, or with a nuzlocke, or a romhack, or all of those things, but go back and play gens 1-4 vanilla. I tried playing platinum vanilla and it was just awful. It was painful, the variety was horrible, the bosses required stupid amounts of grinding if I wanted a full team of 5 (because you NEED a 6th slot for an HM slave unless you want to shit up your team with Hms), and it plays slow as molasses even with emulator speedup.
And that's platinum, good fucking god gen 1 aged like milk left out in 100 degree weather for a week. Buggy as shit, terrible variety, speed controlling crits makes some fights actual hell to play, all over the place difficulty thanks to the open nature of the game, and it looks awful. I cannot play gen 1 vanilla anymore, it's just that bad. Gen 2 is managable, but Crystal Clear is THE way to play those games - or, you know, HGSS, the games that I consider the peak of the franchise. They just did so much right. Compared to gen 1, BDSP are a fucking masterpiece.
