I don't see why not, especially if he becomes a main stay in the anime, in my opinion that would be retarded for to build him up that he want's to catch them all since he was a young kid just for him to give up, his dream and Ash's dream are kind of never-ending, perfect for a long ass anime like Pokemon.

But catching them all wasn't his childhood dream, catching Mew was. He didn't decide to start working on his dex until after he met Ash, and even then it's still motivated as a means to help get Mew.
