When I first saw Goh I thought he was suppose to be like a second Ash Ketchum, a second main character. How is he actually handled in the cartoon?

He's a boy and he's the first time the anime has had two protagonists (stated before the series began), he's pretty much a representation of Pokemon Go since it has become a huge part of the franchise now.
