Gen 3 with gen 4's rhythm game section except more like an actual rhythm game where it has to actually fit the music and has increasing complexity between rounds and difficulties - the same moves that got you through the 1st round of rookie contests shouldn't be enough to claim victory in master rank. The regular attacking rounds should have a timer on your turns, allowing you to use combos where the better they flow together the more points you score but miss out in bonus appeal/jam effects, while if you use fewer moves/just one you have a better chance of wowing the judges with it plus getting those bonus effects but will add fewer points to your score that round so you have to strategize more than just using the moves with the most hearts next to them. I'd say dressing up your pokemon, but only if it took placement into account as well as how well the chosen accessories fit the category, which is never gonna happen if we can't even get battle animations that emit particles from designated zones on the models unless this was in a game with like 10 pokemon total. It should also be its own quest path with a fleshed out story, either in a game centered around contests, a more open ended game where the goal is something entirely different than "be the best" and it's one of several things you can specialize in, or as a parallel story alongside becoming a battle champion.
