EarthBound's text processing famously had to be completely overhauled for the English version. The Old Man glitch in Pokemon Red and Blue exists solely because of changes to the text system in the English version.
If you look at the OP, Chansey hasn't literally become an egg, all that happened is that the game inserted the text string "the" in front of the Pokemon's name. Japanese doesn't use articles like "the" or "a" so in English they would have had to write code that inserts articles depending on the circumstances. Clearly when the target name is "Egg" it's programmed to insert "the", which is a pretty amateur solution seeing as it causes problems like in the OP.
