Is staraptor the first useful route 1 bird, or were pidgeot, swellow, and noctowl "alright" in their respective games?
I never played gen 1 or its remakes so I have no context on Pidgeot. Noctowl gets access to some psychic moves and hypnosis. Swellow gets to learn boomburst. Do these see usage in their original games?

Pidgeot was okay given the roster of pokemon. It was a pretty good flying choice but by the last few gyms it was outclassed.

Noctowl was eternally useless outside of hypnosis spam, but other moms could do it better.

Swellow was actually pretty good in it's gen.

Pidgeot and Swellow were servicable in the sense that they could learn attacks with over 60 BP. The only reason to use them over anythinh else is that they can learn fly. Noctowl is trying to be a tank in a game where team composition doesnt matter. You are correct that staraptor is the first good one.

Pidgeot was shit. Evolved late, shit moveset, crap damage. You were doing yourself a disservice by not using Fearow or Dodrio instead, even if Dodrio showed up late it was strong as fuck.
Noctowl was meh, but it was a good option considering your options.
Swellow was really strong, so Swellow was the first useful bird, of course it was outclassed by Staraptor, who supported the team better with Intimidate and could use Close Combat.

Staraptor is SSS tier ingame thanks to Intimidate and Close Combat, but also because it's onoe of the very few usable flying type unless you want to run crobat. Togekiss is Pt only and a pain to get, Drifiblim is probably the easiest missed Pokemon on a casual playthrough, Honchcrow is Diamond only and not very good, and Chatot sucks.

Other regional birds aren't bad, but Staraptor shits on all 3 Sinnoh starters and Flyinig/Fghtnig is an insane combo ingame, I'd argue its actually the best ingame Pokemon in the series.

This is the only right answer. Noctowl was niche but is fine now with its much needed an expanded movepool (I'm using Noctowl in BDSP and it's significantly better than in DPPt, Pelipper was always meh due to its typing but became very good around Gen 7 with Drizzle, Pigeot is just okay in Gen 1 and 2 but is best by HGSS at which point it is outclassed by Staraptor.

Fearow was great in Gen 1 and 2. Swellow was great in Gen 3.

You forgot that it's moveset requires little to no tm investment. It can do return/double edge+CC+Brave Bird and the last skit is totally up to you for hm utility.

I deleted my reply since I noticed everyone was only discussing the regional birds Gen 4 and below but yeah, most of Unfezant's movepool is support moves or shitty physical ones that don't help it. The only non-STAB it gets in BW is U-Turn via TM and Steel Wing as an egg move lmao

Pidgeot may not be the most OP of mons but being a fast normal type with access to hyper beam in gen 1 was more than enough to sweep through the entire game.
Noctowl was shit.
Guts+Facade Swellow was unironically top tier both in game and in competitive.

Because youll get to use that maybe once in game. It's fun in pvp, sure, but the ai's shitty teams and movesets means you're only ever bringing swellow in to oneshot fighters and grass types. Its rarely getting statused, and the game never ever punishes you for switching out.

I always picked Pidgeot when playing Gen 1. Bird Jesus is very good.
In Gen 2, I tried Noctowl, but I always end up with Pidgeot again. He is more useful.
In Gen 3, I stayed with Swellow. Really fast, can learn Steel Wing and Aerial Ace, and aces Cool Contest competitions. Good pokemon.

I'd argue Kadabra is better as far as in-game goes. It's not as easy to obtain and evolve (but still pretty easy) and once you get it just completely breaks every game it's in. It can easily sweep the early-mid game, and sometimes even the late game, especially in Kanto which has no dark types. It's not as strong in Sinnoh but in BDSP you get Dazzling Gleam and Psychic TMs before the 3rd gym, so it becomes a monster at that point. And you get a free choice specs before the 5th gym.

Noctowl is an okay support pokemon on the specially defensive side, but its attack and defense are poor as is its speed.

Swellow is decent in game, basically a more offensive pidgeot except frailer, however if you abuse its Guts ability to give it an attack boost before gym battles start, it does great damage.

Staraptor is terribly designed. The red tip on its crest just screams "look at me, I'm special!" I don't mind job mons like some people here and I'm actually fine with the mob boss theming for Honchkrow, but an overdesigned, edgy emo bird? The fact that it's supposed to be used to spam recoil moves makes me dislike it even more. Theming a Pokemon around self-mutilation doesn't make a Pokemon "cooler" in my eyes. It only makes it worse.

It took some setup and you had to beat Norman but Staraptor didn't compare to the terror that was Swellow.

Pidgey is pretty bad, it has worse offensive stats than Spearow who you can access right afterward, and Spearow evolves a lot sooner at level 20 compared to level 36 for Pidgeot. Fearow also gets Drill Peck which is the best flying move in RBY and one of the best in FRLG. Pidgeot has middling stats, takes way too long to get fully evolved and has a shallow movepool.

Noctowl's stat distribution is really weird especially in Gen 2, and it doesn't really serve it too well in-game especially since in Johto you can get a traded Spearow early game.

Swellow is perfectly fine, its really fast with a decent attack stat and learns some okay moves leveling up. You get him fully evolved at a nice level too. Not amazing but consistent. Guts is a cool ability but will rarely come into play in-game.

Staraptor is incredible. It has a great level-up movepool (wing attack at level 9 is very nice), has a great ability in Intimidate, amazing attack and once you evolve it it gets Close Combat. Getting it to level 34 is well-worth the wait.

Normal typing in gen 1 is actually really damn strong, since most pokemon were lucky to learn one typed STAB move, most didnt. Getting STAB on the moves you did get was actually pretty damn good. Its dated today but a dual typed Normal mon back then was strong.

Actually kicked ass and unironically still kicks ass in ORAS. For in game teams it can carry the game with its speed and good moveset.

The main reason its on every team is that you need a place to put a Fly HM on and its everywhere. Its stats are good but the moves are meh.

Wrong. Noctowl is the tankiest of the birds and in playthrough is amazing. It gets confusion early, can learn dream eater and later even roost. Its a good bird with unique playstyle

Staraptor might have the best stats of the regional birds but it's still the worst and most faggiest one to use. Anyone who uses it probably has the NPC Sinnoh team that also has Luxray, Lucario, Garchomp and Infernape.

Now Swellow and Talonflame, THOSE are cool regional birds.

It got improved later on with Brave Bird, tutors granting interesting coverage with Heat Wave and stuff like that, but as far as we're talking about DP, Honchkrow was far from the best choice.
