When a bad game sells well, nobody wins.
But when bad games sell well some 3-4 times in a row, nobody will ever win ever again.
This is why I'm not buying it.

It also implies that the Mother trilogy (Beginnings-[1], Earthbound-[2], Mother-[3]) are all bad games.
Quality IS subjective, yes. But as more & more features are cut, & the games look worse & worse after each game, the fact that PokéMon is DEVOLVING is undeniable.

Steven Universe surprised everyone by how complex its plot was compared to what people expected. I don't like the show, but there was effort put into it, undeniably.

Took concepts from the previous thing its creators made and worked to streamline and simplify them in a way that doesn't sacrifice overall complexity. Succeeded completely, and deservedly so.

The first huge example of interactive storytelling on the Internet. A trailblazer and a very unique idea.
None of those are bad, unless you're a contrarian. If you want examples of popular bad things, take EA Sports.

Quality is subjective, and thus useless when judging the performance. Success, however, is quantifiable, and it never comes out of nowhere.

I no longer buy the games, but only because they don’t appeal to me. The last I got was sun/moon after not playing any Pokemon games since the original diamond/pearl. Though even by then the series had become stale. Gold/silver really was the high point of the series and it just hasn’t progressed since then and the games themselves are extremely poor quality and seem to be getting worse and worse with each generation, with less and less effort being put into them, this is despite the huge technological improvements in hardware capabilities. It’s like comparing Rocket League to FIFA, where Rocket League is the vastly superior game, with far more love put into it and which is truly timeless, a game that will last decades I imagine. Yet which developer is making the most money? Clearly EA with their yearly FIFA sales, selling the same game each year with slight graphical improvements for $60 a time.

Disappointed people are always the most vocal. It's why you'll often see a lot of negative reviews for products on Amazon or whatever -- if whatever you bought works without issues, why say anything at all? Most people would say something if it's broken, while only a few will say something if it works.
In addition, Pokemon is enough of a cultural phenomenon that the only way for sales to plummet is if there were like less than 30 Pokemon in the entire game, you couldn't transfer any Pokemon from outside the game, and the game crashed regularly, and it never got patched. It would need to be a true trainwreck that no one could possibly ever deny.
