They aren't. Gen 1-3 were the best, accounting for the hardware limitations of the time.
The best games in the series are still gen 1 & 2 when played with speedup.

Pokemon has literally no excuse for the games to be as slow as they are, its embarassing.

It's the graphics. It's the most alive a Pokémon game with sprites could look, both in-battle and the overworld.
Frankly the games per se aren't that impressive, if Platinum or HGSS had been created with that engine then they'd probably be even better.

Gen 5 was the best pokemon has ever looked. 3D was a mistake that slowed the games down even more and designing/rigging/texturing that many unique 3D models was never going to end well

Yeah we had reached that point in which all the sprites through the years paid off and were getting animated.
The battles themselves reminded me of Stadium with the dynamic camera, I can't go back to previous gens after that.
And all the gyms had some great platformer stuff, they looked impressive and made gyms feel like adventures.

This was the beginning of the end. Simplified map designs, off-limits background scenery, intrusive story elements, etc. etc. Pokemon was better when it was more like an open-world dungeon crawler than a theme park.

They were still good for what they were, though. 156 completely new mons, great music, animated battles, robust postgame. You don't know how good you have it until it's too late.

Literally ripping "plot" out of gen 7 to make it "incomplete" would make it a better game, and thats basically what gen 8 is.

I really cant comprehend how people actually believe these games look good. I can't. The shitty pixelated sprites that awkwardly twitched and danced like a crackhead needing a fix, the shitty animations, (compare flamethrower and psychic to the gen 4 versions) and the awful jagginess and sprite aliasing of the overworld. How could you think these games look good?

I could get past the retarded story, the handholding turned up to 11, the linearity, the mostly shitty Mon designs, and the elite 4 only having four mons each if the battles (where like 90% of a play through is spent) didnt look like a shitty super nintendo game.

This isn't an argument for the story not being shit, because all the games have a shitty story, older games just had a minimalist style that played to the fact the writing wasn't a focus point.

Agree to disagree. Ive played gen 5 on real hardware and emulated and they look identical.

I'll admit that it actually tried to have a story. I guess it wasnt that bad by pokemon standards but God tier is a stretch. I prefer simpler less intrusive stories.

Agree to disagree as this is very subjective. Unova had some really cool and unique mons like hydreigon, volcarona, excadrill etc but there was a lot of really bad designs too, and many that were just unnecessary and often worse replacements for existing mons. Its hard to quantify bland like I said subjective af but if I had to id say its 70% shit and 30% good.

Ive heard this before but I'm like 99% positive that plat and hgss also had pretty good A.I. at least on par with gen 5.

I didnt want to come off as a dick, I try to be fair and rational about it too. Gen 5 is definitely the most polarizing gen. People either love it or hate it.
