Johto feels so realistic in that regard, it really feels like traveling through the rural mountain and shrine villages of Kansai (which I hope to actually do someday).
Hoenn and Sinnoh lack this historical element, and Unova, Kalos, Alola and Galar feel so detached, they're so surface level, whereas with Johto you can tell the devs were reflecting their personal lived experiences of living and working there.
I'm hoping that Legends finally recaptures some of this sense of history and age.
