Johto has culture, feels less "theme park" while having many biomes, easily top 3 on my list. I prefer hoenn for the tropical climate and beautiful coastal towns, Lilycove, Slateport, and mossdeep being my favorites. Sinnoh is also a cozy region with a lot of culture and lore.
Galar worst region. Seriously, its a straight line with a big empty zone with random weather and climates, fucking garbage game design, worse then Unova by a mile.

My favourite region is Johto. I could honestly write an essay on what makes Johto the best region but I'll condense it down to a few main points.

>Low stakes, makes it feel like a relaxing visit to Japan, really comfy to play through (at least the original GSC anyway)
>Amazing Japanese aesthetic with many real life references
>Lore that you have to discover yourself rather than it being spoonfed to you
>The Johto Dex just... makes me feel happy when I look at it, I can't explain it, but it perfectly complements Kanto's Dex while not straying too far from what made the Kanto Dex so great in the first place
>Some of the most amazing locations, with vibes unmatched by any other game to this day: National Park, Azalea Town, Ecruteak City, Violet City, Route 32, Lake of Rage, Mt. Silver, Cianwood City, Route 38/39 etc.
>Beautiful soundtrack, both the GSC and HGSS versions
>World actually feels alive due to all the worldbuilding (Crystal PokéGear, daily events, day/night cycle, lore etc.)
and to top it all off
>Best games in the series

Nothing REALLY beats Johto.

I like how the dex complements the old pokemon as well without congestion, for example in the first couple routes you will find your standard rattata, pidgey, and earlygame bugs, but due to the morning/night system you will also find new alternative rodent, bird and bug pokemon on these same routes at different times.

I always liked how the entire region of Hoenn was linked with the story of Kyogre and Groudon, like it’s clear that Hoenn was once completely submerged beneath the ocean, save for the volcano. The two fossil Pokémon are also water-based, but so were the Kanto fossils. Either way, Hoenn is Kino IMO, but Johto really takes the cake for being so cozy

Favorite region. ...I think for diversity, I liked Hoenn. Desert, rainforest, mountains, caves, meadows, volcanoes, over the sea, UNDER da sea. I just felt the transition to GBA was a little... awkward. Johto in HGSS was peak comfy for me. It took how I imagined the games, playing them as a kid and expanded upon them. MY favorite games are Gen 5 games, so I like Unova a lot, but for the sake of variety, Hoenn takes top place for me.

My favourite is Johto, followed by Hoenn despite me not really liking the Gen III games that much. Credit where it's due because Hoenn is different and unique whether it's for better or for worse. Sinnoh felt like a retread of Hoenn and Kanto without any real identity by comparison.

Don’t like the rest. Worst for me has got to be Unova. So boring, same with Kalos which is a shame because France and continental US could have been more interesting. Galar was a little better but was still far too linear feeling

I love Japanese history and folklore, I read basically every book on it I can find (which in a university town, is a lot).

Johto feels so realistic in that regard, it really feels like traveling through the rural mountain and shrine villages of Kansai (which I hope to actually do someday).

Hoenn and Sinnoh lack this historical element, and Unova, Kalos, Alola and Galar feel so detached, they're so surface level, whereas with Johto you can tell the devs were reflecting their personal lived experiences of living and working there.

I'm hoping that Legends finally recaptures some of this sense of history and age.

If Sinnoh didn't have that snow area, it'd be dead last for sure. The games need more of those.

I honestly don’t dislike any of them though. Johto easily the best though because of how it evokes that feeling of an adventure through a more rural landscape with a natural connection to a more industrialized Kanto
