Gen 4 is still linear, just done in the worst way. Non-linear would be all 8 gyms being accessible and challengeable all at once, and their teams scaling with each badge you get.

Because nonlinear jrpgs suck. It makes it impossible to design a level curve. Nonlinearity is why the Johto level curve is as bad as it is.

There was also the fact the climax of DP and Platinum played out differently, with the pathway to Spear Pillar being conspicuously signposted and the player basically led to the summit to start the event in Platinum - already reacting to the reports of Japanese parents who had two years of listening to their kids cry the games were too hard to finish.

Linearity is good because you can properly design levels around it. Open world garbage is for insecure people who need to rebel against the game (probably projecting their parents onto the game) and have “freedom” because they don’t have control in their real life.

They're also too prideful and refuse to hire people that actually know how to make games and keep masuda as the director even though most 3d pokemon games he's directed are ass

Linearity is at odds with the setting and vision, which put exploration and discovery at the forefront.
Linearity also gets a bad rep because people associate it with railroading, which isn't true. As long as the player has enough agency in things like playstyle its fine.

Because they never moved away from the classic level based rpg system. To go open world they'd need to abandon it in favor of a softer more flexible system, and flatten stats significantly.

To be fair, non-linear doesn't necessarily means open-world. I'd actually love it if we could have a clear intended path that the game wants you to take, but still leave hidden and harder to explore alternate paths that allow you to essentially sequence break by reaching towns and getting HMs (or whatever equivalent to them) early.

That’s not because of open world, it’s because Pokémon won’t add a fucking logbook. If you miss one line of dialogue in some of the older games, it’s can be genuinely difficult to figure out where to go next, meanwhile an infinitely more convoluted game like Morrowind is probably easier to navigate than some Pokémon games because you can just bring up a quest menu that tells you exactly where you need to go. Not to mention getting lost in an open world game offers the prospect of discovering other fun shit to so, getting lost in a linear game is just plain obnoxious.

The issue isn’t with linearity so much as Pokémon’s specific brand of linearity is dogshit. The OG Pokémon games were rigidly linear simply because of the limitations of gaming technology, not because it’s some crucial ingredient to its success. Red and Blue were pushing the technological limits of handhelds when they were originally released.

no they absolutely were not. there were already handheld rpgs with full color graphics and large world maps years before pokemon even existed.

Open world is really hard to balance properly, just ask Bethesda. For example, in Pokemon, if you simply put the player in an open map, he would still be forced on a linear path because otherwise he'll get buttfucked by high-level opponents. So open world becomes pointless, you might as well make a linear and more handcrafted experience. The obvious solution would be to implement a system where the world scales with the player's but that just diminishes all sense of accomplishment and can fuck over the player if they decided to start leveling new mons.
Game Freak has barely enough time to glue together a working game, let alone experiment with this stuff.
