Are the fossil mons any good in Red and Blue? They seem cool and kinda forgotten but you probably already have a water mon and a rock mon in your team

Omanyte is alright thanks to the massive special stat and Blizzard/Surf. The other two lack good moves and are not worth it. None of them have any decent coverage.
They're all unusable in FRLG since they start at fucking level 5 instead of 30.
So go for the ancient snail. It's a top tier water type.

Aerodactyl is probably the best, if only because its so unique, while there are so many Water Pokemon in Kanto, you don't have to look far for a better Water mon than the two fossils.

Only shillmons get to have good movepools. This is part of Game Freak's policy as dictated by TPCi.

Kabutops doesn't even learn any rock attacks in gen 1, so the rock typing is mostly there to fuck him over against grass moves.

Then again, there's barely any Grass moves lategame, while there's still tons of Normal attacks. Plus it gets Gen 1 Slash and Swords Dance. Omastar has great Special, but Kabutops is actually completely legit.

You'd have to keep your TM08 until late game, because Slash and SD don't work together. You also have to slog through 10 levels until you even get SD as Kabutops. Amonite at least gets decent Surf and can level on the last two gyms, while Kabutos special stat is just horrible and there're no moves for it besides Surf.

You know Rock was probably at its best in Gen 1, type-wise. Too bad their weren't really much in the way of Rock-type moves for the Fossils. They could have been so much better with them. Especially Aerodactyle would have killed with a Rock Slide or something.
