3d pokemon are supposed to be dynamic with how they move and idle whereas 2d must have a dynamic looking sprite already because they’re permanently frozen like that

Most of the big ones look weird because their 2D art and sprites gets away with not having to give them remotely logical proportions. Can't really do that in 3D, not without turning them into a weird noodley monstrosity, which is why so many of them just look fat.

If diglett can keep the constant rocks/dirt around where it pops out of the ground despite it not actually being part of its body to avoid showing the rest of it then I don't see why this thing couldn't keep eternally pumping out sand.

The mystery is the whole point of Diglett. No one knows what it looks like beneath the ground. There's no mystery with Hippowdon; it's a goddamn hippo and its pre-evo isn't partially buried. The sand coming out of it in the sprite is just a representation of how it shoots sand out of the holes in its body, it's not meant to imply that it swims in sand while battling.

Dragon Quest enemy models look amazing and quite true to Toriyama's cartoony art.
They absolutely could have made great models, but they outsourced it to an asset farm to make all-purpose models they could reuse in as much media as needed.

That's a load of bullshit fed to you by lazy/bad modelers.
3D is very easy to exaggerate and is often crucial to do so in animation.

Because DQ monsters are more cartoony in general, Pokemon are pretty realistic by comparison. Some more than others of course, but in general the least realistic, most cartoony Pokemon still looks very realistic compared to the most realistic monster from DQ or Yokai Watch.

In general, yeah, but there are Dragon Quest enemies that don't look particularly more cartoony than Pokemon, like the dragon enemies. A lot of them even could BE Pokemon.

Pretty much every flying Pokemon.

I have no idea why they've decided to fix and tweak other models over the years in small ways, but they're still using the fucking flying models from XY sky battles all the way til now. The constant flapping animations are really annoying and distracting to see in battles. I wish they'd leave them on the ground and have them fly during their attack animations.

A lot of pokemon "move" around way too much like they're autistic creatures. They all need more dynamic "static" poses and fixes for animations and signature moves.

Hippowdon is probably the most egregious example of something losing a certain charm. It'd be cool if it was partially submerged like Diglett is.

Those models are fine, it's the animations, which would be relatively easy to fix.
It's not even consistent, why can Swellow never land but Taillow can sit on the ground?

It's not the model, all of the flying Pokemon have grounded poses for Amie/Refresh. They simply fly in battle because why would a creature that can fly NOT fly when it's in a fight?

And you're confusing cause and effect. Sky Battles were created because of the flying animations, not the other way around.

This is the problem with discussing this, people seem to be able to put it into words perfectly but half the examples cited are just totally wrong. Anyone who complains about Archeops or Eelektross exposes terminally shit taste and invalidates any point they're trying to make.

Flying when they're attacking makes sense, but Pokemon like Vibrava and Archeops whose Pokedex entries say they don't fly much still never land, ones like Salamance and Charizard that look extremely awkward flying permanently, ones like Swellow and Skarmory that are somehow gliding permanently. Why was it necessary that they fly now when they didn't before for several generations?

I agree it doesn't work for some Pokemon like Scyther (who is noted to rarely fly), but Skarmory is easily fixable simply by having it actually flap its wings. For most of them, it makes sense that they'd never land, because Pokemon never have a chance to sit still in the middle of battle, they're always on the move.

In the early 3D games when Skarmory flies each of the individual blades in its wings flies independently. It looks cool like that, and it makes sense at th end of the days, it's a metal bird, so it's flying should look a bit more mechanical, that clip from the anime looks a bit too natural for a Skarmory imo.
