I wonder if Hop should follow same story as Paulo in the anime who starts off friendly but become more and more darker due to his desire for power & obsession with winning specially since he is Leon's younger brother.

So worried what we'll see in the next opening. We'll probably see a few Master Class people besides Cynthia, Lance, Leon.

I don't expect Ash's team to get any additions but we may see some old Pokemon. For Go they could spoil if Grookey evolves or not, nothing else would matter much.

If Dawn continues to appear next year they should put her in the opening since she missed this one.

for everyone that thinks Goh is leaving/ash leaves him behind, how will the anime do it?

i don’t see it being the typical ash ‘leaves to go to another region’ or goh wanting to stay at the lab to fulfill his dreams cause that doesn’t make sense. They already travel to a bunch of regions daily. It also isn’t getting in the way of ash wanting to be a pokémon master. Them going their separate ways cause Goh wants focus more on catching pokémon also wouldn’t work cause he’s met most of them by tagging along with ash and going on adventures with him. and if there’s a new region in the next pokémon iteration, obviously ash is gonna be sent there, why wouldn’t goh head over there as well? It sounds so counterintuitive with how goh’s character is set up. The only way i’d see them split up realistically speaking is if they had some kind of fall out

That’s the thing, they gave goh such broad range of goals in the same vain as Ash’s series long goals and directly works alongside him. And the anime does hammer this in enough by saying he’s not Ash’s rival or anything that directly competes against whatever Ash wants to do.

I think Go potentially lasting in the anime a long time depends if the Pokemon Go game dies down in popularity, but apparently the game is still bringing in millions in revenue and doing really well. I can see them keeping him around for this reason.

I'm surprised more people aren't thinking that Project Mew is going to be the way he'll be written out. It feels like it exists mainly to be his ticket out, much like how Kalos Queen was the eventual driving force for Serena leaving even if she ultimately didn't become one.

The scenario I see with Goh leaving is that, assuming Project Mew isn't actually evil and is defeated like what some have speculated, Goh decides to join Project Mew and goes with Asahi and Tsurugi instead of Ash. He'll still be catching Pokemon and searching for Mew, just off-screen.

Ash’s team throws a wrench into the theory that PM will be three year series. They gave him 2 Kanto classics and Lucario. These aren't flash in pan regional shillmons like Greninja. These are franchise staples.

How exactly do you imagine Goh leaving via Project Mew though? I can see where the idea comes from, especially since the project is tied to an arc of Goh trying to be less dependent on others and Ash specifically. Although they also push the idea of him doing team work, so I guess it's more about him learning to be a dynamic part of a team that can do shit on its own but also allows others to help when needed. Either way, while it technically could be a thing I guess and the most realistic way to write him off, I don't see why they should at this point. Why push a new character specifically created for the anime that gives an easy way to showcase all kinds of Pokémon, just to write him off after having caught at best 150 Pokémon by the end of next year? It feels like a pretty stupid choice to me, especially if he's the only character to date to get an episode focused on him where Ash didn't appear a single time.
That being said, who knows what sudden epiphany the writers might have in the future. They've made stupid choices before too after all lol.

To be fair, there was DP001 where Ash didn't appear until the very end, he might as well not have been there at all. Not even the eyecatches for that episode had him.

Goh is given some ultimate test and he passes it. Perhaps during this test, something goes wrong and he saves the day. After this test, he is offered to join Project Mew. One scenario is that he joins, and that's how he leaves. Another scenario is that he declines the offer and decides to become a solo Mew researcher, and leaves Ash to go on his own journey.

Remember that this is the same show that has a guy wanting to be Pokemon Master for almost 25 years and still hasn't attained it (and probably never will), two coordinators who left without becoming Grand Coordinator, another who left without becoming a Dragon Master, and another who left without becoming Kalos Queen. Traveling companions having goals and leaving before said goals are accomplished is a tradition at this point, I don't see why you think Goh's goal would be any different.

Go is a protagonist on the same level as Ash. They never did that with any of the companions. The marketing behind the show was “duel protagonists” for the first time. Having Gen 8 Pokemon doesn’t mean Go is tied to Gen 8. This is like saying Ash is tied Gen 4 or 5 because he shilled the Pokémon from that generation.

The difference between their goals and Gohs is that they’re still tied to specific regions. We’ve already established that Ash and Go just travel to wherever whenever they want. Why would Project Mew change that when Goh already essentially does what the project people are about?

Yeah theoretically could happen anywhere...So why are the characters themselves still in the region we left them in when they make their reappearance in the anime? Ash and Goh had to travel to Unova to see Iris. Ash and Goh had to go to Sinnoh to see Dawn. And I'm sure that in a possible future Kalos episode we may see Serena. The issue here is that none of them have really been established to travel that much outside of their origin regions

Look, at the end of the day there are TWO(2) options for the future of the anime. Now, normally this wouldn’t even be a discussion, but based on the current circumstances(PM being Continuity: the series, the title itself, the whole world champion thing), it’s worth indulging the Gohfags.

Option 1: The default. Ash moves on from PM to the Gen 9 region exclusively, and Ash and Goh part ways in what will probably be a tearjerker of an episode. Ash’s PM mons go to the lab, with the POSSIBLE exception of Lucario for shill shenanigans.

Option 2: PM becomes the new normal. The PWC and Project Mew are only singular arcs in a new, ever-evolving series. Gen 9’s region, characters, and stories are merely slotted in to the current structure.

Personally, I prefer some form of option 1. Why? I don’t think that this sort of series is “stable”. You can only do so much continuity before it starts to become a little stale, and the hype factor behind it dies down. Now, this can be remedied by crossing the characters’ arcs together(think Dawn vs Serena in a Wallace Cup or something as an arbitrary example), but I’m not sure they’re willing to do that.

In addition, and this may be the larger issue, Goh will end up becoming stale/flanderized over time, as the writers struggle to think of places to take his character. Look at Brock or Misty post OS as an example. I believe that Goh’s character arc is paced to conclude in a regular-length series, and dragging that out simply isn’t worth it imo. What do you guys think?

The pokegirl can travel where ever they want. The issue is that they are game characters tied to their generation and they stop being relevant for marketing once their Gen is over. Gen 1 is the only generation TPC manages to keep it’s Pokemon and characters relevant all the time. The others depend on remakes.

I honestly wouldn't mind option 2, as someone who has been away from the anime since Black and White, I've enjoyed the new structure a lot from an anime standpoint, the old structure of traveling through that gen's region got extremely repetitive for me personally, so I just fell away from the anime and would only come back for that seasons Pokemon League. When I heard PM's format would be traveling to all the regions it grabbed my attention immediately and I've been enjoying it quite a bit so far. I also like how they've handled/are handling the current Gen's story/region with Arcs (We are probably going to see Rose again since he escaped in the anime, but got "arrested" in the game).

They basically hone in on one specific aspect of his character every series to give the illusion of development
XY: His thoughts on what exactly a Trainer and Pokemon are meant to be, and realizing that strength isn’t everything
SM: His relationships with other people and Pokemon
PM: Him being a “veteran” trainer and teaching Goh about the world of Pokemon
All of these aspects are present throughout the series; they are parts of Ash’s character as a whole, and of course he wouldn’t be complete without them. But basically, the writers focus on a specific ASPECT of him each series, but overall he doesn’t fundamentally changed. He hasn’t really changed since BW-XY transition.
When this approach fails, they retread previously touched-open plot points and arcs. For example, Bea being a rehash of Wulfrig. To be fair, these two events happened for different reasons. In XY, Ash took too much upon himself, and started doubting himself after going on a losing streak that culminated in Wulfrig. In PM, Ash grows overconfident after the opposite happens: he has a massive winning streak in the PWC, not dropping a single battle until Bea.
However, the result is the same. Ash internalizes the loss WAY too much in JN for someone who’s supposed to be a veteran trainer now, and you can clearly see what happens from there.
At any rate, using Ash as an example doesn’t disprove my point. Goh should start and (mostly) end in PM, and it’s definitely not a good idea from a character perspective to do otherwise.

Sadly, just because Scorbunny was his starter doesn't mean he'll keep Cinderace around forever. It'd be soulless but they could keep Goh by just cycling out the Galar shit for Gen 9 shit, the same way they cycled out Brock's Kanto and Johto Pokemon for Hoenn and then Sinnoh Pokemon. There aren't really any rules that they stick to on this.

From a writing perspective, it'd be nice if Goh never completely dropped Cinderace and Inteleon, but only used them for important shit in the next gen, like when Ash would bring out Charizard for stuff, but they could get completely sidelined or even written out like Greninja.

Anyone else think Bea should have won? She had Ash on the ropes the whole time, made all the right choices, and did massive damage to Lucario with Machamp BEFORE getting powered up post-Gigantamax. As a trainer, she made all the right moves, and it was bullshit for Ash to win because Lucario learned Steel Beam (a move Machamp resists) in the middle of a close-range clash. It was like they changed the ending last minute but it made no sense.

Another possibility is that Ash isn't retired, but becomes a secondary protagonist and some new character becomes the main protagonist. We're already seeing a test of dynamic with Ash being a mentor to Goh. I still think Goh is leaving eventually, but I wouldn't be surprised if he was made partly as a test to see if audiences would accept an anime where Ash wasn't the MC anymore.

Remember how in the earlier Gens it was so difficult to travel through regions. It was not uncommon for Ash and his friends to spend many days in a single forest or area.
But now he and Goh just hop on a plane and travel seamlessly to any region that they want to. It really cheapens the effort put into the earlier Gens and really irks me, because it shouldn't be this easy.

Planes have always existed in the anime, as has expedited sea travel both by Pokemon and by watercraft. Ash had cause not to travel by vehicle, both because he's a broke fucking child, and because his gym challenge was always laid out in a road he could travel. It was never that he couldn't have hopped all around, it was that it would have been impractical, where now it's optimal for Ash and Goh's more target specific adventures.

As far as Ash's friendships/interactions go, I really prefer when his companions have a level of confidence and humor to them rather than needing Ash to be their 'savior'. Ash's character flourishes when he's bouncing off of someone who doesn't need him to save them. When bouncing off of Serena, Lillie, and Koharu, Ash reverts to a very basic happy face and a "you can do it!" mode that doesn't let much personality through.

He comes across as more comfortable (and entertaining) when paired with characters like Misty, Iris, Kiawe, and Goh. He can mock Misty for her bug phobia, get into heated fights with Iris and Kiawe, poke fun at Goh by asking if he wants to quit the search for Kingdra, and it never feels pedantic and doting like his relationships with the aforementioned three girls. It's like he knows they aren't capable of anything incredible (big goals and big accomplishments are what make Ash excited) so he just defaults to being nice to them.

I'd argue that the Journey's format is technically better because it is an opportunity to introduce game character and storylines from various regions that never made it into the anime before. This includes the E4 members.

Q1-3. That really depends on just HOW the anime treats the legendaries now. I stopped watching Pokemon when Ash jobbed against Hoenn guy and came back after his Alola win. At least in the Shudo-written movies they were treated as Gods and forces of nature, and not meant to be caught. Is that still the case? Sure there's a literal creation god now but I know that there was that Pyramid Head dude who had three Regis, and in the Gen 3 games they were powerful forces which were sealed away. And in SM it seems like almost everyone caught or befriended one of these, I'm including Mythicals because they are pretty much the same shit before the split. It also seems like there could be multiple versions of the same powerful Pokemon- to add to the confusion.

Plus it would be cool if Ash catches Latias and puts her on a team with the Thirsty Bayleef while Goh has Latios.

Furthermore it seems, much like Ash, the writers have realised it's impossible for them to depict him catching them all and decided to downsize his plans to the more manageable 'catch mew' dream. Hence the introduction of Project Mew, and a series of random size quests for Goh to embark on. I'm not saying it cannot be done but the only way for him to catch all 1000, and depict it, is to drastically retool the anime (5 catches or evolves per episodes) or have him go on a huge offscreen catching spree.

That is on top of promoting the new BDSP, Gen 8 and whatever they have in store for the anime's anniversary next year.

In short, there is no way for them to realistically depict him catching every Pokemon right now unless they switch to a series which is entirely about capturing to the expense of all else. People say that Goh hogs the screentime. The problem is that the staff has to do so much at once.

The sub only really gained traction during XY, and even then there was a tendency to refer to game characters by their english in-game name. Anime-only characters XY onwards tend to get called by their Jap name, hence Koharu, Millelfeui etc.

I see the possibility if he joins the project to work with Asahi and Tsurugi, but I doubt they'd make him go on a solo journey to catch Mew. It wouldn't make much sense if they're putting focus on him doing team work and appreciating the journey more than the end goal. Drake's appearance and words in specifically a Goh episode make it pretty clear that this is part of the development they're trying to go for. Additionally when Goh's dream is in the focus, it's usually alongside Ash's. Like episode 20 that paralleled their goals, Ash implying at the end of the Mewtwo episode that their future is intertwined and the Drake one. I'm sure there are a few more that I'm forgetting.
So speaking from a narrative point of view, the only options that I can see that aren't complete asspulls to write the character off are:

>He and Ash stay together, no matter if the format around them somehow changes (both of them going to the new region) or not.
>Both he and Ash leave.

I'm speaking more of its marketability. With Goh's goal, they can easily shove random Pokémon into the episodes to shill without even taking much screentime. Dragon Pokémon are a limited amount, for a contest performance the Pokémon needs to fit the premise at least somewhat and they can't have a contest almost every episode. So Goh's five second catches are a pretty useful asset to shill all kinds of Pokémon to varying degrees and is probably the reason why it seems like he takes up so much more screentime. Alongside that, Ash's battles (and the character returns probably) keep people hooked with the hype factor, so that they'll stay for the more or less boring catches inbetween too.
So that's the biggest reason that elevates Goh's goal and by extension his character from other companions and is probably why they made him the second main character in the first place: It plays perfectly into the anime's main goal, which is selling merchandise. Merchandise is TPC's biggest source of income after all.

They hyped Goh up as "the 2nd protag", they give him a broad ass goal, literally shills pokemon go to the kids and goes to any region he wants. It's not guaranteed by any means, but he's got way more to back up that thought process than the previous companions in the anime. These are not the same arguments though. Yeah people had arguments about it after every series, but the difference here is the anime's structure. Not entirely based in Galar, actual continuity going on and going to past regions frequently, not labeled specially as a sword/shield anime, the formula is not the same, etc. The SM argument doesn't make much sense and the May one was our first outright replacement way before they established this would be a continuing routine.

It made sense at the time, it was very commonly believed the Selene and Elio designs were deliberately super bland because of the character cutomization system, and that they weren't going to be treated as marketable "canon looks".

I don't think there's really anything ridiculous about what I said. Serena was MARRIED to Gen 6 and showcases/contests. People hypothesized that she would stay not out reason but out of their desire to keep her as Ash's girlfriend. It was a coping mechanism to deal with her inevitable exit from the series. The circumstances of Goh's creation are completely different and so is the nature of his character. There isn't a practical reason to get rid of him. He's as popular as Serena was without polarizing young audiences, he's completely new and not from any game in particular, and he has a goal that allows them to bring in whatever Pokemon they want to animate and promote. He's also a main character whereas Serena was a supporting character, so it's a little disingenuous to ignore such a specific and revelatory distinction made by the company. I get why a lot of people had their hearts broken when Serena left, but it was inevitable. She didn't have a snowball's chance in hell. She could have been three times as popular as she was and she still never would have set foot in Alola, no matter how much it hurt. And for that I really am sorry. I wish you didn't have to get hurt so bad. Goh on the other hand has no precedent because they've changed the whole show to fit him. Anything could happen, and it doesn't matter how much people hate him, he could be the most hated character in the show, three times the amount he already is, and they'd still do whatever it is they're planning on doing with him. I'm guessing they keep him but you can bet I won't care if they don't.
