Black and White are quite passable games in isolation, but the all-new main game dex made them a very obvious "breakpoint" in the franchise making it feel "wrong" as a *Pokemon* game.
Diamond and Pearl have a pile of screwed up game design from having to work with over a decade of legacy code and little ability to change it, but because of still caring about it they had the building blocks for Platinum to quite easily fix the most critical issues.
Essentially, VP genwar bullshit comes from the fact that the games evolved over time and BW gave a dividing line that doesn't fit either side.
XY have more identifiable similarity in all matter to SwSh than to DP, while the first four gens are muddled enough from gradual change to operate as a block...
And BW doesn't fit in with either. Its problem is that it has no real franchise power in it, because the preceding games were gradually changing and the later games settled on a different formula.
