FRLG aren't even my favourites. I'd say that's either HGSS or B2W2. But I would consider FRLG the way to play Kanto. Bringing it up to more viable battle mechanics, a good inventory system and imo, better graphics and (I'll get shit for saying this) music.
It certainly has flaws: sevii islands are a fucking nothing burger and locking later gen pokemon to post game is dumb. But I'd easily play it over: XY, DP, SWSH or even BW
