What was the deal with Rotom and why did Gamefreak completely ruin his backstory?

Back in Platinum, it was implied that there was only one, the one that Charon found in a old toy, befriended, & abandoned, & it fled to the Old Chateau's tv. But come SM, Rotom is everywhere, as if it's just a normal part of society now. even Rotom-dexes were made, implying there are many Rotom now. This gets even worse in SwSh with the Rotom phones, Rotom bikes, Rotom Drones, and those weird looking Rotoms on top of the PC's.

What the fuck happened?
