Blaziken was banned from gen 5, 6 and 7 because of speed boost, makes sense for it to be banned there if there's less mons to answer to it

Dugtrio didn't have as large of a movepool in Gen 3 as it does nowadays. No sucker punch, no memento, no stone edge, and no stealth rock. It also didn't have the +20 attack buff Dugtrio got in Gen 7. HP Bug and Aerial Ace aren't doing shit for damage off of a base 80 attack.

None of those mattered as the powerlevel was much lower back then. Hell, relative to other pokemon cb dugtrio was an actual offensive threat that could permanently remove a damaged swMpert, mitotic, blissed, etc from the opponents team leading to easy braindead sweeps.

Power level was lower, but there were still some crazy threats in OU in Gen 3. Salamence, Suicune, Skarmory, and so on. And the power level was low enough that Porygon2 actually saw usage in the tier, and with Trace + Ice Beam, it was a guaranteed Dugtrio killer. Not to mention Pursuit trapping with TTar.

The most delicious irony of this OP is that Blaziken DID get Unbanned this gen; and it turns out that without his mega stone or Z-Moves he's kind of a shitmon now; not merely just bad but usually avoided for being unreliable. Even in National Dex, literal fanfic meta, he's still considered shit and is only ever used reliably with a Z-Move which he needs.

though frankly I never thought his mega was that overpowered anyways, given that it had fairly common walls and was wrecked by any SE attack combined with a fairly limited movepool. The only reason it would ever be annoying to fight is due to Baton Pass memes, which smoggies banned anyways.

Once the meta evolves in BDSP he'll come back down. Even then though he's unbanned in the actual Gen 8 OU format everyone plays.
