honestly i don't even think gamefreak knows at this point which is probably why we've been in a "one step forward, three steps back" loop for like 8 years now
they should just focus on one or two of those and go from there, and the games would probably skyrocket in quality

Battling and catching, exploration not so much. The last 3 gens cut down on optional areas and side paths, opting for what I think are supposed to be like a guided tour of more interestingly-themed routes and cities. The DLC wild areas in particular feel more open, but that's about it. Overall not terrible, but underwhelming to be sure.

Play it again. I just finished replayoing platinium and I was impressed how many side spots this game has, but most of them open with hm and you need to backtrack

I mean small paths that you ignore because you miss cut, but then when you return you see it and discover a new way. It more noticable with surf. It opens some big ares in caves for example.

Yeah I guess you could say that (assuming you mean B/W AND B2/W2 when you say B/W), hidden grottos were definitely a step in the right direction and made the world feel more inhabited by Pokemon. Too bad the actual encounter mechanics behind them are AIDS and I would prefer if they were a bit more intricate/varied in layout. Also a lot of them can be accessed via backtracking after getting HMs.
