Blue is very good and probably still the best template on what a rival is: a competitor that's always in your way as you're trying to grow. His character arc was also solid throughout gen 1 & 2.
I get Silver's story and I don't think his character was bad, I just could never bring myself to care for him.
Wally was whatever. It never felt like the game gave you a strong enough reason to ever feel attached to him. It was kinda like you were forced to babysit your cousin.
Berry's decent. But I feel like he needed more moments like the one at lake Acuity, to really show how he changed after being humbled like he was there. Cause what happened at the lake was supposed to really change his outlook on pokemon and battling, but he kinda never got a scene to really show that.
Gen 6 rivals can all be trashed.
Gen 7 as a whole is so forgettable to me. I know I beat Sun but I can barely tell you my experience in it, so I can't even comment on the rivals.
Marnie is cute and unfortunately, that's almost all she had going for her. She's such a non-factor it's kinda sad.
Bede was okay, but his arc felt like Cheran's but not nearly as well executed.
Hop's arc had some good ideas, but as a result of ShSw overall being really lacking in the story telling aspect, it wasn't executed well at all. I feel like Hop is the biggest case of wasted potential.
