Pic unrelated, right? Venusaur is in a better shape than any other Kanto or grass starter. It gets a significant buff every couple gens as well.

this card is based on LGPE, a remake of Gen1 games
TPC and Sugimori made Pokemon Masters around the same month with Red (wearing Charizard-themed clothes) and Charizard as his ace while Venusaur wasn't available for a year.

Bulbasaur doesn't fit Green particularly well. At least when Red chooses Bulbasaur and Green chooses Charmander, there's a thematic flip in their color schemes, with Green having the red mon and Red having the Green one, but if you give Red Squirtle, everything just suddenly goes to shit. Because Squirtle doesn't fit Red's color scheme or name. And Bulbasaur doesn't fit with Green's overall image of being a smug bastard with a shit-eating grin.

I feel that Raichu is Gamefreak's biggest regret.
