>>48858494I like the Unova story because even though it's cheesy shounen shit, it's still a step up from the previous games. It's slightly more involved and more like a "real" JRPG, and they struck a balance between the player not being the most important person in the universe while not just being passively along for the ride.
Subsequent games had their moments, but ultimately were still just "villain is a lunatic who's going to use the box legendaries to end the world and ONLY you can stop him for some reason".
I know they need to tie the box legendaries into the plot somehow, but I wish the games would go even deeper into making engaging lore around them and a story with more characters and developments.
I'm pretty sure I read once in an interview that they intentionally make the stories so simple because players might forget or not play for a while, but Dragon Quest is also for babies and salarymen and doesn't seem to have that problem.
