Whereas Megas were more selective and were mostly given to Gen 1 'mons (with both Charizard and Mewtwo getting two of them) and was the main gimmick of the games.
(Technically Gen 3 got more, especially if you count ORAS. But they're literally Remakes of the main Gen 3 games.)
Also the fact that Sycamore gives you a free Gen 1 Starter near the beginning of the game.
Not any previous Starter or one each from 1, 2 and 4, just Gen 1.
And honestly it didn't feel too bad in XY, but it was the beginning of a bad trend.
