TPCi was scarred due to the failure of the eReader outside of Japan, despite the issue being the fact that you needed 2 GBAs and the cards to use them. Amiibo stuff is basically that.

I still don't get it.
Even like you said if they had some kind of special trainer battle or you just get a gift Pokemon, its not really a big deal. People love the Pokemon figures and they can still make them without worrying about the toy license. Unless its all TOMY's fault

Fuck off, amiibo are absolute cancer and it's a goddamn miracle this didn't bleed over into Pokemon. The series' reluctance to lean on DLC and microtransactions in general is pretty amazing, people shit on GF but they could have gone the way of EA, Ubisoft, and Activision if they wanted to.

Amiibo exist primarily as a method of selling on-disk DLC, not as collectibles. The guy in charge of Nintendo at the time even gave an interview saying how genuinely confused he was that people were buying Amiibo just for the sake of collecting them, rather than using them to enhance the gameplay experience. Pokemon has always largely avoided that kind of DLC, so it's not that surprising that the two haven't really meshed. I don't mind one bit, I despise Amiibo as a concept. All they do is validate and encourage on-disk DLC, since Amiibo are essentially just physical paywalls for content that is already on the disc/cart, but requires the Amiibo to be accessed. What a bunch of shit.
