He may not be in the top tier of fire types competitively, but he's always a solid choice, and should fare well wherever you need fire types in game.

Even competitively though, Houndoom is not that bad. Granted, it was never in OU, but you don't tend to find too many fire types in the higher tiers. Prior to gen 6, it was in UUBL and UU, which is high enough to say "you could use this in OU if you really want to". It didn't handle power creep in the later generations that well, but that's not really going to apply in BDSP.

Is it as good as Infernape? No, because Infernape is an insanely good mixed sweeper. But that doesn't make it a bad choice regardless.
