Emotions, Knowledge, and Willpower are all legs of the tower that is “spirit” that Cyrus believes is unnecessary and brings conflict and confusion to the world. The way he backs this up is by bringing up his it’s unclear if Pokémon share the same sort of spirit that humans do, and if they can live without it than so can humans. This would be a valid point if Pokémon were like Digimon but they aren’t. The the Professor of Sinnoh researching Pokémon evolution is in direct contrast to Cyrus’ perspective and that’s because Pokémon evolution is directly tied to a Pokémon’s spirit. Pokémon are sentient beings that act alike humans, understand human speech, etc. and many of their evolutions coincide with humans as well as stuff having to do with a Pokémon’s spirit. For example; Emotions (friendship/happiness evolutions) or Willpower (leveling up/Mega evolutions).
Cyrus thinks humanity can’t go on with such trivial traits, and wants to make a new world devoid of that, which is why he is attracted to the Distortion World.
Lysandre on the other hand believes greed, overpopulation, and human and Pokémon’s violent tendencies will bring the world under, so he seeks to to clean the world of its flaws and do a reset with only the chosen ones. This again directly ties to the professor’s research, being that Mega Evolution is tied to the bonds between humans and Pokémon and creates something special because of it.
Both characters are fundamentally great, it’s just they lack backstories to add context to their beliefs.
