sadly pretty much all of them suck ass. Is there some kind of conversion formula? It seems weird to me that they don't just pick an alternate color scheme. It seems to be wholly unrelated to anything I know about the relationship of colors.

shinies were determined by palette or something like that in gen 2 and up

Yeah back in the day it was some sort of conversion of pallete. Maybe it was just another pokemon's pallette but I don't recall how it was decided. It was decided somehow even if they weren't all chosen one by one

It was all manually picked, there's a separate file for shiny palettes in Gen 2, and in Gen 3 the backsprite uses the shiny palette, with frontsprite palette applied when normal and back applied when shiny.

Nah, OG shiny was still yellow on pink. Regular sneasel, however, was indeed cyan on brown, which is honestly a color scheme I like a fair bit.
