It took Game Freak six years to develop Red & Green with Tajiri as director. And Gold & Silver had to be delayed by a year.

Simply put, with Pokemon becoming such a huge franchise, Tajiri couldn't keep up.

people are fans of pokemon and the pokemon world, not the people behind it. the only reason masuda and james are so well known is because they make many public appearances, interviews and maintain a presence online. Tajiri doesn't subscribe to things like twitter and keeps away from the cameras. He has so few photos that he wouldn't often be recognized on the street. I bet most people who started playing pokemon with gen 3+ think masuda started the franchise.
