Gamefreak was on the right track with SM. The limitations of the 3DS held it back. Instead of expanding on it with the Switch they spent most of their time on le wild area and the rest of the games locations suffered as a result.

Yeah. I really hated when they removed all the features from older games... that were on the 3DS...
But fuck, that region design amirite? It was so soulful, they were just held back by the hardware. How were they supposed to compete with X and Y? It was all the hardware-- totally not a conscious design decision to make a game even worse than XY of all shit games.
The only reason we don't have Triples/Rotation/Hordes/PSS back a gen later on the Switch is all because of the 3DS!! Damn Nintendo and their shitty hardware.

The only game that manage to do that was SWSH, and that too because everyone one was confident that nothing could get worse than XY and we were caught off guard. SM is better than both by a mile, which doesn't say much since the bar is so low but still
