Is Gold the only first version to be less popular than the second version? Ho-oh just looks so lame compared to Lugia. The kiddies always gravitate towards the "cooler" looking mon (Charizard over Blastoise, Groudon over Kyogre, etc.)

Silver sold better because of the movie that debuted the second generation. As someone who lived through the timeframe, Lugia and the bird trio became my all time favorites because of the movie. It definitely helps Lugia has ungoldly defensive stats while Ho-oh has that nasty x4 weakness to rock.
