BW1 Unova is the most linear region in the entire series. I love gen 5 and still agree that it's overall a classic Pokemon game at heart, but you can't deny that it's where nugen region design began.

Ehh, even then it's a bit of a stretch. I mean, there's no story reason to backtrack to Route 17 and 16, but you can, and you get goodies from it. There's really no reason I can think of to go back after you get surf in Gen 6, and the same with Gen 7. Unova at least has a reason to back track, but it's specifically optional.

Like it or not, the most objective way to divide "classic" Pokémon and "new" Pokémon is to have the former cover the 2D games and the latter cover the fully 3D games. Any other definition always comes across as totally arbitrary "game I like classic, game I don't like nu" nonsense.
