Generation 4 and 5 had literally the best feeling of world building I have experienced, Gen 5 with the best story telling.
I especially love these categories when they are things you'd go out of your way for, like reading books, talking to npcs, making inferences from these sorts of things in relation to what they are, all that shit, it's so fucking cool.
I was doing a replay of Gen 5 recently, and I was talking to a friend about what old Unova may have been like whilst I was exploring the ruins in Undella town. A lot of the relics and items found in there say they're roughly around 3,000 years old. It's an interesting note because that's the furthest back we get to human civilization records in Unova, but it raised the question, why the hell is this place underwater now? For the rest of Gen 5, we never really found out, just inferences from things regarding the king at the time wanting to stop something what he considered evil. Fast forward to Gen 6 and now we hear about shit like the ultimate weapon, how it was fired 3,000 years ago to end a war. The game was super vague on anything beyond that. Then it hit me, old Unova and old Kalos were at war with eachother and Kalos won. That mother fucker entirely leveled the civilization in modern Undella Town with that thing, which explains why everything is underwater. This shit just blew my mind and you never would've been able to find out about this stuff unless you did a little digging yourself. Presumably those who survived went to what is now Relic Castle, a settlement that dates back as late as 2,500 years ago, and where the core part of the plot of the box legendaries more or less kicks in. THIS is quality worldbuilding. Even when it comes to the main plot Gen 5 certainly takes the cake. Shit like this feels so hard to come by.
