GO by itself was fine, but once GF saw the power of mobile games from a business standpoint, dear god did things get ugly
that being said, XY is no saint either, being piss-easy games with the most bland and boring characters. sure, pokemon was never supposed to be super challenging, but XY definitely marks the start of the overcasualification

Gen 7 was on the same damn hardware. There was no excuse for it to be less technically impressive in any capacity. All they had to do was take Gen 6 and add onto it.

XY. Once GameFreak realized all they had to do was nostalgiawhore for past generations to drive up sales it was over. Go also had a hand in this, but the decision to include Mega Evolution on top of on-the-nose references to all the gens previously (mainly Kanto and Sinnoh) was basically tying the core premise of Pokemon and tossing it into a lake. Generations 6-8 have all been derivatives of each other, relying on gimmicks to set them apart and the blind loyalty of it's fans to sell. It's damaged the series to the point that Kalos' main gimmick is expected to be across the entire series regardless of reason. Even now in BDSP, a game without Mega Evolution, the affection gimmick completely ruins the fun of a past region.
XY irreversably damaged Pokemon as a franchise.

Go didn't do shit, its biggest impact was adding raids to swsh, and while those do have room for improvement, they're far from the biggest issue with those pieces of shit.

That's honestly the worst offender for me. I was levelling some pokemon to get the last few ribbons in SM and it took fucking forever to get them to evolve let alone the later levels that have moves I need.

GO however is what brought in the armies of normies and ever since that day pokemon has gotten away with far FAR too much. Else the Alolan forms wouldn't be strictly Dark, Dragon, Ghost, Fairy, and Ice Types as those were the types that Kanto had next to none of.
You do understand the concept of a machine, right? If even one of the cogs in the machine stops, then everything else is affected. SM was directly affected both by Pokemon GO, Let's GO, the plans for another Gen 6 game that probably never entered actual development, and its own troubled development that led them to scrap gyms and replace them with trials during the debugging phase.

Sun and Moon were also planned to have direct compatibility with GO-- you can't really say that GO directly caused irreversible damage to the franchise would acknowledging Sun and Moon's troubled development and the way that this affected the end of Gen 6, the rest of Gen 7, and the beginning of Gen 8 which explains why Sword and Shield are so similar to Sun and Moon's haphazard design philosophies.

Sure XY may not have been as fully realized as BW, but the changes gen 5 introduced are what directly led to XY and SuMo.
Exp all? Basically an extension of the revised exp system.
Multiple useless "rivals"? Started in gen 5
Dialogue bloat? Gen 5
Focus on "story"? Gen 5
Gen 1 shilling? Gen 5, except they tried to mimic the "experience" with no old mons in the dex instead of directly pandering.

Sure gen 5 isn't the worst offender in any of these regards, and some of it was tolerable enough, but lets not pretend it isn't what started it.

I don't think anyone's denying that Gen 6 was definitely the start of the downfall considering that it signified the identity crisis that it was going through and exemplified many of the symptoms that evolved into the current state of the series-- but at the same time, Gen 7 was really what ended up solidifying the new direction with practices like removing the core gameplay elements that were present in Gens 1-6 along with the National Dex-- and one could argue the reason for that may have been partly due to Pokemon GO, but it's also important to consider that shifts in the franchise were happening as far back as 2015 when Iwata died as he would no longer have his nose in TPCI's affairs.
It's more appropriate to say that Iwata's death is what caused irreparable damage to the series since that is the most likely time where they would have shifted development of Sun and Moon from a successor to Gen 6 into its own Yokai Watch spinoff-tier thing.

Interesting coincidence if you ask me. It's almost like the people that defend nu-Pokemon don't actually play their games and just exist on this board to try and stir up opinions about the older games for being better. Gen 5 was pretty great and it was the foundation for Gen 6 that ended up still being even better in execution than it to this day. It's just a shame how much we fell from SM on to the point where BDSP ended up being the most tolerable game since ORAS.

Anon those are two different things. In black and white it had level scaling reducing the exp gained if you fought a weaker pokemon. It had nothing to do with exp share mechanics.

That would be gen 6. Gen 5 on the other hand tried to form an identity of its own with gen 6 however everything was pandering to the point where Santalune was a 3d remake of viridian.

But let's be honest everything terrible with pokemon now spun out of the complaints towards gen 4.
Cross gen evos were reviled for their designs so they removed them eventually adding mega Evolution to buff mons without changing the pokemon permanently which led into the other generational battle gimmicks.
People complained about the layout of gen 4 being too confusing and as a result the progression became linear, then in XY dungeons were simplified and eventually removed in SM

There's only one issue that arose due to another gen and that's the kanto pandering as a result of the complaints of older pokemon not being in gen 5 because impatient children couldn't play through the entire game.

Meh... I much preferred USUM to SwSh or BDSP. It had enough new content to pique my interest (unlike BDSP) and it felt like it had a lot of content to justify it as a 3DS Pokemon game (unlike SwSh, which felt very subpar for a Switch game, especially without the DLC). Maybe it's because I liked the Battle Tree, Poke-Pelago, and even the Rainbow Rocket nostalgia pandering, even though the cutscenes drag down the game.

I've soured on gen 5 alot since release, since I've tried to replay them and can't force myself to do it.
I didn't like XY too much on release and warmed up to it after SuMo though.
I though swsh was an improvement over sumo, since most of the stuff cut was stuff i hated in sumo (plot and dialogue)

Fuck no. XY and ORAS were panned as not having enough content by any means, how is USUM, a game with even less, supposed to justify itself?

The cutscene meme is a misconception brought about by people who didn't bother slogging through Gen 7 or 8. The issue isn't cutscenes, it's that there is no gameplay in-between them so it gets to the point where you're just arbitrarily walking to the next marker in pic related because god forbid you try to go off the beaten path lest you be stopped by some rando on their Stoutland-- this is only compounded by the fact that Alola's map design is abysmal and lacks any real dungeons with the only thing even remotely resembling one being Vast Poni Canyon and USUM Victory Road, but even that is a stretch.
Gen 7 are the games that are good as an idea but actually playing them shows just how shallow they are, they're only conceptually good and that's something it shares with Gen 8 except the ideas for Gen 7 were SO good that they pretty much give it its whole identity to the point where the only ones who bother defending them are conflating their opinion with pre-release SM or have never played Gens 1-6 to actually see what Pokemon is supposed to play like.
On all accounts, Gen 7 was a massive downgrade technically from Gen 6 and that is fucking sad because Gen 6 has always been bottom of the barrel.

Oh and I'll add that this did eventually prompt the creation of regional variants which while a good idea in theory meant that the originals no longer get any improvements whatsoever. I mean, cross gens are now going to them for the most part. There's no reason to use say regular Linoone over Galarian since it can evolve further.

Excuse me? Anon, you didn't have to grind in BW and even if you did you would have the powers and Audino to grind in an incredibly short time.

That's interesting. If anything I'd say the flaw is that Sinnoh had so many artificial *restrictions* in movement, i.e. you can only go through the map the first time in the way the developers intended you to go. There were strange checkpoints like the Sunyshore blackout and the Psyduck that need a secretpotion in addition to the heavy use of HMs as checkpoints, you were forced to team up with people like Buck and Marley the first time around and could only follow one path since you weren't able to use Rock Climb or Surf when paired with someone else (Cheryl and Mina were fine though), the snow and marsh made it difficult to point A to point B and pick up all the items in the route, etc.

GF have never done anything technically impressive
the only thing that comes to mind is Iwata shoving kanto into gen II, but even then it wasn't gamefreak
The closest i can give GF credit for technically impressive is maybe gen V, but even then DS was figured out completely by then and there were far more impressive RPGs on the platform

Gamereak are just milking the franchise in their comfy free money jobs and programming out of spite

The dex cut and dlc was the least worst thing about Swsh. Not that I think it was acceptable, you got a larger amount of team options upfront compared to the rest of the series and the DLC was the best part of the game. We're probably going to have to rely on DLC to make the future games playable.

Not a lot left and not very useful in the grand scheme of things especially inverse battles and super training since the former isn't used outside of one trainer and the latter only had its use in reset bags.
