I'm currently implementing the mining mini game across my region as an overworld encounter thing and I want to add more items to the loot pool to make it more worthwhile to go mining. I already plan on adding things like the type boost gems and hold items like eviolite and iron ball, but I want to keep the items logical for being found by mining.
Are there any items you guys would want to find while mining? Or just think would be a good idea to add?

I don't think it will matter but if your game witll be higher res or the backgrounds going to be any kind of different shade in the minigame or potentially bag (idk how it shows up in the bag probably a different sprite) then you should just make those pixels transparent instead
The only place this "they're for blending into the background" thing is a thing is on pokemon and it's the opposite, you leave those so that they appear to pop away from whatever background regardless of the color

Anyways the point was that it takes like 10 seconds to do so you're probably not going to finish this romhack if you can't be bothered to do something simple like that. It is what it is.

I plan to have more features, such as an arousal system in battle where if a pokemon is above a certain arousal threshold, it changes their sprite and they have a +1 atk/sp. and -1 def/sp. def stages as well as moves affecting a pokemon's arousal... It really just depends on what I can program. Ultimately I want to make it more of a monster raising sim like monster rancher, even if that goes against the core design of pokemon.

You should look at Pokemon Ecchi version for ideas since that is really the only game with developed H mechanics. Trade evolutions work like that there. It's a tradeback girl with H scenes for each mon.

I've been toying with a couple very different ideas for a nongym fangame.

1) Indiana Jones type McGuffin Adventure.
Starts off your basic "explore the ruins" setup. You fall into a hole, discover a mcguffin statue and give it to your teacher.
The digsite is attacked and you have to play keepaway/get-back with petty thieves and chase them to the main city, where the museum you're supposed to give the item to is waiting.
Turns out a villain group wants the shit for profit or as a treasure map to some dangerous ancient civilization weapon.

2) Open-World RPG Pokemon Academy.
You start off as a general education student at a prestigious Pokemon academy. Its mostly a life-sim but the exact setups vary based on if you pick specific classes/majors.
The main paths I'm thinking of are Trainer/Gym Leader, Professor/Research, Medicine, and PokeTech Engineering.
The Trainer/Gym Leader setup is closest to standard Pokemon mechanics. You're challenged by your professors every ingame week (if I include time limits, probably won't) or major test to pass the combat courses and supplementary elemental balance shit.
Pokemon Professor is superficially similar to it but functionally it might be closer to Pokemon Breeding since you're picking a specific thing to check out and develop. Tests there might be more producing a Pokemon with specific eggmoves.
Medicine and PokeTech Engineering would be more item crafting paths. One with a focus on synthesizing shit out of berries and natural medicines, the later with crafting Pokeballs and hold items.
Fucking around too much or failing too many tests might yield the 'hidden' dumbfuck route where you wind up as a low-level grunt. You're given a low level common annoyance Pokemon and get to work your way up the ranks and maaaybe have the chance at challenging the boss for control of the gang.
In the actual paths there is a chance that you might get approached by the evil team's leader as a prospective officer or research minion.

Go to bed. Honestly though I hate real time shit in games. No reason to rely on real clocks when people might not finish a day's stuff during the day because they have actual shit to get done.
X real minutes = Y game hours is a possibility but that would fuck over people getting lost on campus or stuck in dialogue or the players walking away to get food or take a piss.
Thus: bed.
In some paths its possible that you might lose a day because you got hurt in a explosion or by a stray attack, but I'm not sold on that idea.

I know more or less what it would look like as a game.
The trick would be making it, and the custom sprites for the academy. Not to mention keeping the right balance of a big enough area for to give the illusion of a sprawling college grounds... but keeping everything under video game standards to prevent people from saying fuckit.

Although I would be tempted to add hidden sidequest shit like joining clubs for tips on where to find x rare item for y mainline quest bonus and running fundraisers or parttime jobs for extra money.
If there is a parttime job, it'd be a time-skip event where you get x money for work and maybe suddenly it'd be nighttime and you'd have a risk of running into a grunt or an asshole looking to start shit.
Which would then mean you'd have to have a pokemon on you at all times outside of the trainer/gym leader classes.
..maybe you'd have a "childhood starter" that's been appropriately leveled up?
And extra funds in case you want to go outside the college grounds to the forest nearby for a wild mon to train up...

They look so rough and flat.
Look at the rock formations, they're the worst offender, you can't make a mountain that doesn't look awful. The cave entrances have the same issue as minecraft doors too, they're so small while everything else around them tends to be big.
Emerald is among my favorite games but damn it looks bad compared to other GBA games.

Id love to see a hack that takes the best looking fake mon from across different games, and moves them into one greatest hits game.

In all level scaling games if you just bring a level 1 or 5 Pokemon, your enemy uses that level too, so they're all super easy.

Right now its going to be a classic 8 gym style game, the region is pretty big and I'm filling it with tons of optional dungeon style areas to give the player more exploration options. It's not open world but I'm trying to go the Johto route and let the player push forward as far as they want even if they're under leveled.
Additionally there isn't gonna be an overarching storyline with an evil team and all that, but rather a bunch of smaller sidequesty stories that will hopefully give the region more life and make it so NPCs are actually an interesting part of the game.
I'm staying away from fakemon for now mainly since I suck at spritework and if I ever want to use my own fakemon ideas I want them to look good. It's only gonna be pokemon from gen 1-4 for the main game with gen 5 and 6 becoming accessible after the elite 4.

I'd toss out the limited time unless its meant as something like Harvest Moon in terms of pre-planned time shit.
Expensive PokeCenter could be a neat feature... if you're focusing on resource-management intensive stuff and have a way to get the money you need. This also assumes battles with wild mons are less common.
If you're combining expensive PokeCenters with cheaper camping and limited money but lots of loot, you could have players hoarding the loot items until they get to town and then selling them for money needed for other items or Pokeballs.
Whiting out as game over is a dickmove with all this other stuff involved. As is restarting from save.

Why do these look so familiar? The bottom two especially. Anyways, I like them.
Something about some pixel art, yours included and no offense, seems like there's way too many pixels. Does this make sense? Most people's fakemon use too many "real" dimensions. I can't really pin it down in order to explain it but look at a pokemon from any gen but especially pre DPPt and then look at a fakemon there's like 4 times as many pixels or something that just makes it looks a bit off.
I don't mean this necessarily about yours specifically, it's just something I've noticed.

Honestly who cares. These are good enough for me. Not every fangame needs perfect sprites. The designs are what I care about, and these are good. Just focus on making new mons and not worry about polish so much. You'll just burn out otherwise. Be more confident in your shit.

I'm thinking of changing the ghost-fire tail to pure bone. Doesn't look as nice as I'd like and would be too close to a Flareon's. Maybe the tip would be flames like the legs are.
Head naturally will change. Might make it more like Umbreon's. No fire, maybe bone again.
Can't change the head to bare skull as that wouldn't match the general cute face for the Eeveelutions.
Maybe bonespurs jutting out around the eyes? No. Frames nicely but wouldn't fit...

Sylveon has white as a main color so white bone wouldn't fit.
I want something dark to help pair visually up against Umbreon since so far most Eeveelutions can be paired off based on color themes... but Umbreon is the only dark one.
If I do go dark body/pale face, it'd probably be a similar yellowed bone I already have.

I'd stay stick with the original base sprite you posted, change the gold bones to look more like the skin color as if its protruding through its back, then maybe just add some flair to its ears or forehead to make it stick out a little more. I think the grey and teal color scheme you have looks great, especially with the eyes.

Unfortunate that you don't like it, I figured giving the player more opportunities to get to use cut in a single location would help make it less of a shit show especially since they're all within close proximity of a Pokemon Center so you wouldn't have to go that out of your way to get a Pokemon from the PC to use Cut if you didn't have one on your team already. Also the Cut area in the South-West wouldn't be just one item, aside from the first cut tree (the one next to the Cut House) each one would have an item for the player to acquire, mostly minor stuff like some Berries you might not find until later and maybe some other items like a Moon Stone.

Idea, where the cut trees are, add access to the water there. Add a good item and add some unique pokemon to the water there. Hmm, I dunno something I really like about West Hoenn is how there's a flow to it, you're nicely guided in several loops around the region as you get towards the 5th Gym, and once you beat Norman you can then explore the oceanic Routes to get to Slateport and head up to Mauville (or just cut through Route 103 if you just want to get moving faster), adding surfable water to Rustboro I think would interrupt that flow since it would further encourage players to go back up through Petalburg Woods since there's also the surfable water on North Route 104, but then players might just end up going through Rusturf Tunnel, Verdanturf and Route 117 which offers little in the way of new content as opposed to the Oceanic Routes and is more time consuming than just cutting through Route 103.

I like both of these. I like the one on the left more. Maybe try to add the details of the left one to the right one. See how it looks. So like copy the head of the right one to the left and add the yellow cheeks/forehead part. You could try making the tips of it's ears yellow too.

the thing is that you're already blocking off that area with cut to begin with, so why make several more obstacles that use cut after the first tree, you're basically just making the player sit through a bunch of cut animations and it's pretty unnecessary especially if all you're putting there are some berry trees and a moon stone.
unfortunately it's more of a consequence of hm obstacles being shitty than anything

I think the school setting is a bit more interesting. I like the idea of a Pokemon game that's more focused on a location rather than journey across the country, but I think it'd be hard to pull off right. A strong cast of characters will probably help the location feel real and easy for the player to get attached to emotionally.

Yeah probably. I've not looked into pokered but in pokecrystal as I understand it you just pick a block from the map's set. And I concur with the other anon, black voids are fine for indoors areas. Can work with caves too, try it out.

What about the general consensus on exp limit?
It seems conventionally hackers add a limit sort of similar to either the badge limit or just straight cutting off experience at a certain level for example. Should the player be able to grind if they want? If they want a level 98 caterpie at the first patch of grass, why not?
On the other hand, most players want some sort of challenge and not necessarily a self imposed one.

I'm looking into raising the level cap in general as one part of a solution, I figure it could go up to 250 easily without rolling over or anything (in PE, roms probably would break). I don't know. Just some thoughts.

As for raising the 100 level cap it seems pointless as most Pokemon reach the best they ever are by level 50-60 and romhacks only tend to go beyond this to either keep the game going for longer or add great moves for movesets down the line. You're not going to make a game that reaches level 250 by length alone without sheer autism and there's only so many moves you can add to a movepool past a certain point

It would be nice to have an Essentials-like tool which could be used to build fan games, but without being strict about being a 1:1 clone of GBA/DS games, and making use of PC features.

A few annoy me in Pokemon games these days. For example, you have to talk with everyone in a city to find out which NPC triggers and event of gives you something. It would be much cooler if you could trigger dialog with normal NPCs just by walking close to them (see pic related), and story/quest relevant NPCs showed an indicator.

As you can see, a common NPC can just show a dialog bubble without making you stop everything to talk to them. An NPC that gives you something shows a different balloon on top of them (see the left side), and you can click on it to trigger an interaction/event.

As you can see, the inventory and the party menu are accessible from the main screen, there's no need to 'pause' to look at them. That was just an limitation of the GBA, and imo it makes no sense to keep that in fangames.

Don't fall into the Insurgence trap. If you're planning on making a long game, the best solution is to simply nerf the exp gain formula so that Pokemon level up slower; this way you won't be pulling around a stagnant fully-evolved team for 3/4ths of the game.

I'm having trouble with this one because I want it to be a small town but it's in a 4 way intersection for the basically center of the region here's a more zoomed out picture.

That's a good point. I think I will keep it small but booming like quite a few places in Japan are, if you've been. (I haven't been to other countries but i assume there are similar places)
I've decided that since I should make my own COMPLETE titleset (good point anon) I will focus on a smaller region for now, my side region here (i resized it in mspaint so it's going to look like shit almost 100% guaranteed but it's just an overview anyways)

Thanks. I only know a little bit of Ruby. I need to figure out how to generate the rest of the town map better.
Are all these tree only regions supposed to be actual maps in my PE? Currently nothing except the obvious routes actually exist the rest is just auto tiled at an offset angle basically.

I'm not exactly sure what characters you would interact with the most outside of the teachers. If there's a sidequest setup with some clubs or a couple fellow students you're more likely to partner up with for studies, then the characters might be more varied beyond generic NPCs lurking in the background as you do your own thing.

I'm having some issue that I don't know how to track down.

Most definitely, the top will have more in that are and the bottom will also have more of the "fall" section idk what else to call it arid I guess.
It's only on small sections at the moment because of my planned retiling I figured I will just wait on the rest of that redesigning and fixing paths/adding the facilities and buildings like battle tower/casino

Not trying to start an engine war (there's plenty of valid reasons to pick hacks over essentials), but Essentials not killing itself all the time is one of the best reasons to use it. If you think Essentials is suicidal, you've never seen what kind of bullshit gen 3 hacking can pull.

I agree in that why I'm using essentials is because I can do many things I can't do or can't do as easily with a hack. Especially coming to certain engines. I have experience with rom hacking but it's over a decade old now so maybe it's come quite a ways since then but last time I dabbled (about 5 years ago) it was almost impossible to find non-dead links to most of the tools. I think that's better now though.
Essentials is a pain in the ass especially with some of the autism on part of the developers (90% of the questions you google will lead to forum posts where the dev or someone else who's a prominent scripter says something to the effect of "muh readme.txt" or "muh essentials wiki muhhh".
Normally when people ask a question (that's not obviously some dumb shit they COULD just read) it's because they don't understand it. If you just explain how to do it (which you can because you know) then they can not only do it, they possibly will now understand WHY x was an issue ANNNNND future people with this issue will also gain those benefits.

In my mind it's the equivalent of the forum threads like:

Any romhack with medium sized but fun roster? I remember being put off by hacks that just lazily puts into all the 1000 mons and expect things to be coherent and balanced.
I like Clover, and now I'm enjoying Altered Emerald. The idea to keep dex + evo from gen 1-3 but mix the abilities from all gens was very novel to me. Its unfamiliar, but not that foreign since the roster is trimmed to the minimal and makes it very efficient. Is there any romhack that do things this way?

Have some majors that players won't pick. Your post actually inspired me to work on a pokemon tabletop campaign centered around a boarding school and I've added majors like engineer. They work on pokeballs, PCs, healing machines, GTS stuff. No player would pick it, but if you at some point need something mechanical done, you'd try to find an engineering major

In my experience with ttrpg, people will pick ANYTHING even if you don't expect it. So you might have NPCs talking about their photography majors (Pokemon Snap/Todd), art majors (Tracey), or culinary arts (the chef trio/Pokemon Cafe Mix) but they wouldn't be available as options.
...
And I'm trying to avoid making it far more involved than it shouldn't be.

Other NPCs I'm gonna have appear:
A couple would be slackers. You'll have the pretentious asshats only there to get girls via guitar-playing and shit, the lazy fucks forced to apply by their parents and only there to do bare minimum and party, and the people burning out and taking too many 'mental health days'.
A couple would be straight drop-outs or lagged too long in a part-time job that became full-time. This would include some of the Evil Team Grunts lurking in the area.
Some NPCs are actually not in the academy but live nearby and lurk at the school. They'd appear more often during free events and festivals.
There'll be the random freebie giveaway NPCs that pop up from time to time with full bottle drink samples.
Then there's the crazy NPC hanging around the belltower yelling about conspiracy theory shit and how the students are being brainwashed or lied to. He's not right, he's just a religious asshole.
