Why arent they called Team Galaxy? Seems weird to name your team with an adjective.

They are, in Japanese, blame the localization for doing weird shit like changing Isshu to Unova despite the previous 4 regions having Japanese names.

The Pulseman gang is called "Galaxy Gang" in both Japanese and English, while the Pokemon gang is called "Ginga-dan" in Japanese and "Team Galactic" in English. So that's kinda doubtful.

And even it it was it wouldn't explain the weird name change in English.
