People in Wifi general were giving away any items of value be it Gold Bottle Caps, Mints, Ability Patches, etc ever since it was discovered to promote duping. There were people who didn't even clear the 4th gym having full inventories of items because they recognized an opportunity when it's in front of them, and if you're the kind of guy who wants to "earn his items" then you wouldn't want to dupe in the first place. Not to mention the fact that you even let the game update in the first place.
