No, because it went over my head. The older games don't feel like they're taking place in Japan, partially due to low detail sprites that are open to interpretation and the urban architecture. Anything out of the ordinary can be attributed to the games taking place in mysterious Pokemon land. I'd say the series does a great job at having a universal appeal, the localisation teams, especially did a good job at removing any cultural references.

Culture? No. I got interested in Japanese culture as an adult. In the same way I got interested in a lot of foreign cultures.
Media? Yes. I was born and had my childhood in the 90's. Pokémon, Digimon, DBZ, Power Rangers, Yugioh, Gundam, Sailor Moon, Kaiju Battles, etc. were all part of my media consumption.
