People who would rather be called he or she are fine. It's the people who go, "No... call me THEY" that make no fucking sense. When growing up learning English, people rarely used "they" to refer to singular, only in special circumstances. So people who insist on using "they" are really pushing themselves to use a pronoun that isn't even natural in certain parts of conversation to begin with. It's not like he or she which is just a simple switch.
