They are stored as energy in pokeballs, not as data. Thesystem However can read this energy and then show you pokemon data.

The PC is just an interface for trainers to get their Pokemon from a huge ranch, like they do in the anime.
Think of it like Pokemon are at an Amazon Warehouse and going on your PC is having your Pokemon shipped to you with teleportation technology.

I was once like you, anon. That was my exact headcanon for how it worked, however we made the fatal flaw of using common sense. Apparently there’s a scene in SM were The characters flat-out state that in every region except Alola Pokémon are literally turned into data and left inside PC’s to rot. I don’t have a link to it so hopefully I’m misremembering something.

The anime and manga all have idealized scenarios in which the Pokemon go to some sort of stable or ranch, and the PC is merely a means to communicate back and forth automagically with stable.
But the games just say that they get turned in to pic related and stored electronically. Is there a Pokemon Matrix? Is there nothing because they are stored as data and cannot perceive time?
